EasyJet to offset carbon emissions on every single flight in bid to 'tackle climate change'

"We are doing it because it is the right thing to do"

Budget airline EasyJet says it will become the world's first major aircraft carrier to offset carbon emissions on all its flights.

The airline is investing £25million in its sustainability efforts, which come into force today (November 19), and will be achieved through schemes that include planting trees and renewable projects.

EasyJet also announced a partnership with Airbus to develop hybrid and electric aircraft, saying carbon offsetting is an "interim measure".

The airline has been working with Wright Electric - a US firm that develops electric planes - over the last two years and is aiming to produce an all-electric jet which could be used for short-haul flights.

The airline is also working with Rolls Royce and aerospace company Safran on new technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of flying.

“Climate change is an issue for all of us. At EasyJet we are tackling this challenge head on,” said Johan Lundgren, EasyJet’s chief executive.

“People have a choice in how they travel and people are now thinking about the potential carbon impact of different types of transport. But many people still want to fly and if people choose to fly we want to be one of the best choices they can make.

“We also need governments to support efforts to decarbonise aviation. In particular they must reform aviation taxes to incentivise efficient behaviour, fund research and development in new technology and ensure that early movers such as easyJet are not penalised.”
