Devon Brexit champion Larry Speare is worried about Brexit

Plymouth Live spoke exclusively to the man behind Plymouth's carpet and beds empire about the one topic dividing the nation right now

Larry Speare

Plymouth business veteran admits his iconic brand may endure a choppy ride post Brexit - but he's willing to take the hit in the name of national pride.

The legendary entrepreneur says the bulk of carpets sold from his home furnishings HQ come directly from sources in Europe he's built solid relationships with.

And the 86-year-old chief admits he's having to prepare for disruption by sending staff to seminars to brief them on tariffs which may be imposed at the border in the event of No Deal,

He may have to draw more heavily upon international clients in places like Turkey, India, Egypt and China if there's reams of red-tape to get through - which could increase costs.

But Larry's all in for Brexit because it'll take decision-making - and finances - away from the European political elite, he says.

'I have a very good relationship with Europe'

Larry Speare

Sharp-minded Larry said: "I don't think Brexit is particularly good for this business, because 90 per cent of my large carpet turnover comes from Europe.

"When I started in business, it was all British made.

"But they managed to lose their way and the Europeans moved in, and produced a product that was suitable for most peoples budgets.
