Birmingham's student accommodation is set to be boosted by more than 400 bedrooms across two developments in

Separate applications have been submitted to the city council this month to build 329 bedrooms on former industrial land in Elliott Road and 100 bedrooms on a nearby site in Bristol Road.

The area in south Birmingham is already popular with students, particular those attending the University of Birmingham campus in Edgbaston, but has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks for over-development and perceived inconsistency in approving planning applications.

One city councillor even went as far as to warn that residential streets in Selly Oak were in

Cheshire architecture firm ADD has submitted plans on behalf of a new vehicle called Elliott Road Developments to build 123 studios and 206 bedrooms in cluster flats on derelict land in Elliott Road, close to the Battery Retail Park.

Two previous versions of the project, lodged in 2010 and 2013, were granted planning permission but this latest version contains adaptations to building elevations in order to accommodate lifts, a higher proportion of studios, up by 13 to 123, and amendments to the courtyard.

The overall number of rooms has dropped by two to 329 from the previously consented scheme and it is expected to create six full- and part-time jobs.

In the other project, MAS Architecture and Avaro (Midlands) have submitted plans on behalf of Turnpike Developments to demolish 778 - 800 Bristol Road and build 100 bedrooms and four ground floor retail units in a four-storey building.
