His Dark Materials will take the TV and film industry in Wales to another level

Film and television production is now a significant part of the economy in Wales, with the sector now worth £100m to the country and employing 2,000 people. As His Dark Materials screens on BBC One the industry is elevated to new heights. But the journey to the fantasy series’ epic production has been long

"I knew it was the country with the cool dragon on the flag"

That was pretty much all Lin-Manuel Miranda knew about Wales before he and his family decamped to Cardiff in the summer of 2018. Since then, it is safe to say, the American composer, singer, actor, playwright and producer now knows a lot more about Cymru.

Last year it seemed the man known for creating musicals In the Heights and Hamilton was on a one-man social media mission to showcase Wales to the world.

Earlier this year Lena Dunham, whose 5.6 million Twitter followers surpasses the Broadway star’s mere three million, took on the mantle of “American in Wales Social Media Chief”.

However, the writer, actress, director and producer took a slightly different approach in her promotion of Wales. Such as a naked selfie in a field and declaring a Welsh cake as being like a pancake f***ed a scone. But her enthusiasm for the country was much the same.

Their promotion of Wales seems to have worked. The first two weeks of October reportedly saw the number of Americans searching for holidays in Cardiff double compared to the previous year.
