Coronavirus: National lockdown 'not right course' for º£½ÇÊÓƵ, says Prime Minister

Boris Johnson says he favours a "middle course" approach to try to control the virus

Boris Johnson: We will win this fight against Covid-19

Prime minister Boris Johnson has ruled out another national lockdown in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

Speaking at a Dowing Street press conference on Thursday (October 22), Mr Johnson said he did not believe it was the "right course now" for the country.

He said: "Not when the psychological cost of lockdown is well known to us and the economic cost.

"Not when it is being suggested that we might have to perform the same brutal lockdowns again and again in the months ahead.

"And not when there is such an obvious variation unlike last time, between different parts of the country. That's why we are going for a middle course."

Mr Johnson said the regional and local approach the º£½ÇÊÓƵ was taking was the same as other countries which had been "successful" in their fight against the virus.

He also said he disagreed with those who were pushing for a full lockdown and he disagreed with those who believed all restrictions should be lifted.

"There are some people who say [the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's] economic objective is so important that we should stop all measures to control the virus and stop restrictions on social lives and businesses," he said.
