A Cornish developer has received planning approval from Cornwall Council for 50 new homes in Newquay.

Treveth said planning consent for the 1.98 hectare scheme at Bedowan Meadows was approved by the planning committee on July 31 with members voting 10 to one in favour of the development.

Located south of the North Cornwall town, Treveth said the new scheme will offer 50 homes to local people, who live, work in, or have family connections in the immediate vicinity of the site, "discouraging second homeownership".

The Bedowan Meadows site will include 17 homes for affordable rent and shared ownership, 21 homes for open market rent and 12 homes for open market sale.

The site will offer a mix of one and two bedroom flats, one, two and three bedroom bungalows and two, three and four bedroom houses. Treveth said that the development will benefit from connections to Newquay town centre, easy access to North Cornwall's popular beaches and to the A30.

Tim Mulholland, managing director at Treveth, commented: “We’re delighted to have received such a strong, positive reception from the planning committee for our detailed planning consent for the upcoming Bedowan Meadows scheme.

“It’s no secret that we are currently experiencing a housing crisis here in Cornwall. There are not enough homes for local people with house hunters struggling to compete with second homeowners. What’s more, the lack of properties available to rent in the region is very concerning which is why schemes such as this are critical to increase the availability of different types of homes for locals. The majority of these homes will be affordable homes, shared ownership or available to rent which is what the Cornish housing market really needs."
