Award-winning London agency HemingwayDesign and Manchester estates consultancy GL Hearn have been appointed to create a new masterplan for Cleethorpes.

The companies have been selected following a competitive tender led by local authority North East Lincolnshire Council.

They have a track record of several successful coastal regeneration projects, and are focusing on what makes Cleethorpes unique as the work begins.

It will take in the entire resort, from the North Promenade where a controversial proposal for a towering White Palm installation was recently shelved, to the 'holiday village' that is the Humberston Fitties, stretching back to primary shopping zone St Peter鈥檚 Avenue.

鈥淵ou have an amazing coastline here,鈥 said Wayne Hemingway, owner of his eponymous company, on a recent visit. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much natural beauty, alongside the traditional seaside offering and opportunities to capitalise even more on the staycation boom and the desire to live by the sea that has been accelerated by the pandemic

鈥淥ur first job is to listen to the people who know best, the residents, businesses, those that visit, those that know and love Cleethorpes and want to see it continue to be a great place as society evolves. We want to know what people think of what鈥檚 here, and what could be here in the future.

鈥淲e鈥檙e looking at everything, from how the resort looks, how it could feel in the future, what businesses could be here in the future and how the resort can purposefully evolve and respond to environmental, health and wellbeing and business issues.

鈥淲e want to really get under the skin of local perceptions and understand why people feel like they do.鈥

From now until Sunday, December 12, a where views can be fed in, with further opportunities to be had at round table events being planned in the coming weeks.

The aim of the masterplan is to create a vibrant town, where people enjoy living, visiting and where businesses thrive all year long.

Cllr Philip Jackson, leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: 鈥淐leethorpes is a real jewel and along with local residents, businesses and indeed tourists, we have a unique chance to help shape the town鈥檚 future.

鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted to have Wayne and the team at HemingwayDesign and GL Hearn on board. In the last few years, they have shown that they really bring a community-focused approach to their work and a passion for improving things that matter to local people.

鈥淲e鈥檙e confident that they have the expertise and experience to deliver a masterplan that works for Cleethorpes, and I鈥檓 looking forward to working with Wayne and the team in the coming months.鈥
