Finalised plans have been unveiled for a major redevelopment project set to revolutionise the 'beating heart' of a Manchester suburb by 'turning it inside-out'.

A planning application has been submitted for an ambitious scheme to raze the Chorlton Cross shopping centre and replace it with six residential blocks, featuring ground-floor retail spaces, a novel 'makers' yard', and green areas.

Developers PJ Livesey predict a significant transformation for Chorlton as the new retail layout will effectively turn the suburb's centre 'inside-out'.

Previously, shoppers would walk through the Precinct, tucked away from the bustling Manchester Road. However, the fresh blueprint envisages shops fronting onto the main thoroughfares, which have become a shopping hotspot.

Documents related to the planning application disclose that the project will comprise 262 new homes, distributed across six blocks ranging from four to 10 storeys in height. The mix includes 56 one-bedroom flats, 135 two-bedroom flats, and 15 three-bedroom flats.

A further 49 units will be allocated as affordable housing, made up of 16 one-bedroom and 33 two-bedroom flats. The development will also feature 182 parking spaces, with 164 reserved for residents.

Public feedback on the plans can be submitted online before July 20.

Georgina Lynch, managing director at PJ Livesey, said in February that the company had spent time consulting with local people to develop its plans, and had seen lots of interest in the apartments and in the retail planned for the site.
