Cat café to come to Birmingham

New venture which has already proved popular in Austria and Japan could be coming to either Kings Heath or the city centre if crowdfunding bid is successful

Eric Sawyer and partner Alex Zef plan to open a cat café

It's the café where the cat could get the cream but few would raise an eyebrow.

A young entrepreneur is planning to launch Birmingham's first 'cat café' in which animal lovers can enjoy a cuppa surrounded by feline friends.

Eric Sawyer is looking to open the unusual venue in the city centre or and is set to launch a crowdfunding bid to fund the venture.

The unusual cafés started out in Japan and Austria but have since sprung up in Devon, Wales and London after proving a hit.

Mr Sawyer's business will operate as a normal café but with the addition of 10 in-house kitties.

The entrepreneur, 27, said the market was ripe in Birmingham for a cat café and will launch his bid alongside a charity to raise money for cats in the city.

"The cats will be coming from a shelter as kittens and will be raised in the café," he said.

"That way they will always be around each other and always be there for the customers. When they come back, they will still be there. They will be able to come, relax and enjoy the café and also get to know the cats.
