Plans have been submitted to build almost 150 care home and retirement apartments on a former Derby hospital site, which at one point was being lined up by retailer Next for a new store.

Back in November, a public consultation event was held to gather the public’s views on plans to build the accommodation on part of the former Kingsway Hospital site, along with a coffee shop with drive-thru.

Previously, the site had been earmarked for a new 2,400 sq metre Next store, but a formal planning application was never submitted to Derby City Council.

Now, Leeds-based Torsion Care has lodged proposals with the authority to build three accommodation blocks on the site, comprising an 80-bed car home and 66 extra care assisted living units. The proposal for the coffee shop with drive-thru is not included in the application.

According to the planning application, the scheme, which would create around 100 new full-time jobs, would involve demolishing existing buildings on the site, including Bramble House.

As well as the new accommodation, the plans state that facilities and services which will be available to residents include a lounge, library, cinema, dining room, treatment rooms, gym and a hair and beauty salon.

In planning documents submitted to the city council by ID Planning, on behalf of Torsion Care, it said: “The proposal will provide three units, the largest to be occupied by an 80 bed care home. The care home is the hub of the site, providing the extra facilities and services for blocks A and B (the extra care units).
