Cardiff University has an 拢3.68bn annual impact on the 海角视频 economy, new independent research shows.

The analysis, undertaken by economics and policy consultancy London Economics, derived the figure from the direct, indirect (supply chains) and induced (spending of staff etc) impacts of the Russell Group university鈥檚 activities in 2020-21.

The 拢3.68bn is the highest since the university began recording its economic impact back in 2012-13 and amounts to a 6% increase in real terms on the last analysis in 2016-17.

The university鈥檚 teaching and learning generated 拢1.22bn; research and knowledge exchange activities 拢831m, with 拢970m generated from its by own operational and capital spending. Educational exports 鈥� in the form of international student spending 鈥� contributed a further 拢655m.

The university鈥檚 direct impact from expenditure, both operational and capital, was 拢663m. Based on a total impact from its expenditure, with induced and indirect impacts included, around two-thirds of the impact (拢598m) occurred in Wales. The university has 33,000 students and almost 7,000 staff.

Professor Colin Riordan, president and vice-chancellor of Cardiff University, said: 鈥淭he full scale of the economic and social impact of Cardiff University on the 海角视频, and on Wales in particular, is staggering. Our total economic impact on the 海角视频 in 2020-21 鈥� at the height of the pandemic 鈥� is estimated at almost 拢3.7bn. This means that for every 拢1 we spend, we generate 拢6.40, significantly outperforming our comparator institutions which, on average, generate 拢5.50 per 拢1 spent. We are punching above our weight, and the benefits accrue to the people of this country, to our communities and to the taxpayer.鈥�

The university鈥檚 contribution to the 海角视频鈥檚 balance of trade can be seen in the value of its educational exports which, at 拢655m, exceeds the export performance of the car and other vehicle industry in Wales 鈥� according to trade date from the HMRC.

In addition to employing nearly 7,000 people directly, Cardiff鈥檚 activities support a further 7,000 full-time equivalent jobs in the 海角视频.

Prof Riordan said: 鈥淭hat鈥檚 over 14,000 people in total who have jobs because of the research, teaching, work with industry and general operations that we carry out at Cardiff University and almost 10,000 of these jobs are based in Wales.鈥�

Cardiff generates economic impact fairly evenly across its activities: research and knowledge exchange activities generate 23%; teaching and learning activities account for 33%; educational exports make up 18%, with the remaining 26% arising from the University鈥檚 expenditure.

Prof Riordan said: 鈥淎cross the whole palette of our activity, Cardiff University is creating economic and social benefit for Wales, the 海角视频, and indeed the world. In the current economic climate, universities face huge challenges about how our funding model can be made more sustainable. We must ensure our teaching and research are recognised and valued by government at all levels. If the funding challenges can be addressed, we believe we can do even more in the years ahead.鈥�
