Cardiff Airport reports a further rise in passenger numbers

The airport handled nearly 500,000 passengers in Q1 of its financial year

Cardiff Airport has reported a 10% rise in passenger numbers in the first quarter of its financial year.

The Welsh Government owned airport, based at Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, said that from April to June it handled just under 500,000 passengers.

At the end of June, its rolling passenger numbers for the last 12 months stood at 1.6 million a further increase of 8% compared to the same period last year.

Chief executive of the airport Deb Bowen Rees, said: “It’s great to look back over our quarterly results and to see steady passenger growth, during what is a challenging time for the aviation industry, and to continue to work towards our long-term vision to deliver a sustainable airport business for Wales.

“Our airline partners have added new routes and continue to add more capacity where there is growing demand.

“In the terminal, the team are working hard to enhance the customer experience by improving efficiencies and infrastructure. We are proud to fly the flag for Wales and to welcome international visitors who are using Cardiff as a gateway to the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.”

From the winter season, starting in October, the airport's biggest carrier in Flybe will no longer have a permanent base with jet aircraft.
