Calls for jobs to be protected at Vauxhall in Ellesmere Port after car giant says next Astra will be built in Germany

The MP for Ellesmere Port has called on the government to protect jobs at the Vauxhall plant after it was revealed the next Astra model variant is to be built in Germany.

Justin Madders MP was responding to the car manufacturing giant announcing that it plans to invest further in its Ruesselsheim plant, which has now been allocated production of the estate model.

The news comes despite PSA Groupe having also announced this week details of a voluntary severance scheme taking place in Germany.

Ruesselsheim currently shares Astra production with Ellesmere Port, but no announcement was made about the firm's Cheshire site regarding potential redundancies.

Now the area's MP, Mr Madders has called for the government to protect the interests of companies like Vauxhall and its 1,000 staff at Ellesmere Port.

He said: “It is clear that the priority now is for the Government to unambiguously state that they will not allow future trading arrangements with the EU to adversely affect manufacturing and the automotive sector more generally.

"If the final arrangements do put up barriers to trade then the Government should confirm now that in those circumstances they will ensure that sufficient mitigation is put in place so that no jobs are lost.”

The º£½ÇÊÓƵ is set to leave the European Union on January 31, after which a full trade deal with the European Union is hoped to be agreed by the end of the year.
