A group of business leaders from across the Bristol and Bath region is meeting virtually today (May 15) to start mapping out an economic recovery plan following coronavirus.

The taskforce - known as the West of England Economic Recovery Board - is being headed up by metro mayor Tim Bowles of the West of England Combined Authority (Weca).

Mr Bowles said he invited members to join the board “based on their credibility” within their sectors and that individuals would contribute “time and insight” without financial remuneration.

“Coronavirus is having an unprecedented impact on our residents’ jobs, businesses and livelihoods,” said Mr Bowles.

“It is only by working together as a region that we can build a recovery that works for the West of England, that builds on our strengths and lets us seize the opportunities to renew our economy while avoiding the dangers of a second peak of the virus.”

Mr Bowles said Prime Minister Boris Johnson had asked him to “take the lead” on the project, which will involve the board putting together a plan to support companies and residents in the region.

“This task force will help safely get our region moving again, from supporting our businesses, workers and their families, to getting our digital and transport networks right," he added.

The board will be chaired by Mr Bowles, with Steve West, chair of the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership, as vice chair.
