Bristol City Council to re-establish chief executive job to bring 'greater clarity and accountability' to organisation

The role was scrapped by the local authority in 2017

Bristol City Council is re-creating a chief executive position three years after scrapping the role.

The decision follows a recommendation by the Local Government Association (LGA) - the national membership body for local authorities - following a follow-up peer review visit last year.

The LGA said the role would “bring greater clarity and accountability” and provide “additional energy” at the top of the organisation.

Bristol City Council is currently led by executive directors, including executive director for resources and head of paid service Mike Jackson, who has been tipped for the job.

Mr Jackson has already been recommended by a selection committee made up of a cross-party group of councillors to take up the role - but the appointment needs to be confirmed at full council on May 21.

Whoever takes on the role will report to Bristol’s elected mayor Marvin Rees.

Mr Rees said: “Our journey over the past 18 months has been one of re-imagining the role of the local authority whilst ramping up delivery of our ambitions for the city.

“The emergence of the Covid-19 crisis and the necessary period of recovery that follows sees our journey rise to unprecedented challenges and requires the council to evolve to meet them.
