Bristol Airport has launched a fund to support decarbonisation projects in the South West that focus on emissions from flights and transport activity to and from the hub.

The Aviation Carbon Transition (ACT) Programme will help finance initiatives that are working to reduce direct and indirect emissions from airport infrastructure to enable lower or zero emissions.

The programme will also support projects exploring:

  • The research and development of decarbonisation;
  • alternative fuels for use by airlines;
  • design and develop processes, and procedures to eliminate emissions.

The airport has also agreed to be a potential test bed location for the schemes it supports.

The ACT Programme will start with funding of £250,000. Businesses and organisations are being invited to bid and apply for cash, with projects being considered through an application and interview process.

Simon Earles, sustainability and corporate affairs director at Bristol Airport, said: “The launch of the ACT Programme will enable us to develop initiatives and projects to contribute towards decarbonising aviation and the creation of green jobs.

“We are making great progress towards our target to be carbon neutral for emissions under our direct control by 2025. The ACT Programme demonstrates our commitment to working with others to support innovation in relation to decarbonising transport and flight emissions outside of our direct control."

Applications for the fund open on the Bristol Airport website on July 1.
