Bold plan to re-open passenger train line and link it to HS2 moves forward

A council is exploring the economic benefits of the bid

The proposed train line linking Kirkby-in-Ashfield with the HS2 site at Toton

A long-running bid to re-open a freight train track to passengers is set to move forward, it has emerged.

Ashfield District Council in Nottingham wants more details on how a project allowing passengers to ride from Kirkby-in-Ashfield to the proposed HS2 station in Toton would work.

The authority will also explore what the economic benefits could be.

The proposal would involve re-opening and upgrading a freight-only line to allow passenger trains between Kirkby-in-Ashfield via Pinxton and Selston to Langley Mill and  , and then on to   and Nottingham.

The council, which is run by the Ashfield Independents, has now asked companies to bid for a contract to put a full detailed report together.

The winner of the council’s tendering competition will then create an economic report which can be presented to the Government and transport bosses from  .

Ashfield’s planning boss, Councillor Matt Relf, said there would be several benefits to re-opening the line, and that the project is being supported by a host of organisations.

The councillor, who represents the ​Sutton Junction and Harlow Wood ward for the Ashfield Independents, said “The proposed line would link Mansfield and Ashfield to the Toton station hub for HS2.
