Birmingham's Clean Air Zone charge delayed for second time

City council confirms the new charge will not be introducted until the end of August at the earliest

The new Clean Air Zone planned for Birmingham city centre has been hit by a second delay.

The zone was initially supposed to launch in January but last summer it was announced it would not commence until July this year at the earliest.

Birmingham City Council leader Ian Ward has now confirmed that the project's launch has been delayed again - until at least the end of August.

The Clean Air Zone will mean drivers of vehicles which do not meet certain emission standards will be hit with a charge to enter a designated area of the city centre, bordered by the A4540 Middle Ring Road.

The council says this latest setback has been caused by huge errors with the Government's online vehicle checker and the charge will not be introduced until at least six months after these problems are solved.

This was also cited as the reason for the first delay when it was announced last June.

Last week, the Government published the online vehicle checker which allows motorists to see whether their vehicle is compliant with the new Clean Air Zone charges.

There have been issues with this checker, with several vehicle owners who thought their cars were compliant being told they would have to pay £8 per day to access Birmingham city centre.
