Organisers of the Birmingham Pride Festival have hailed this year’s event as the most successful ever after more than 75,000 revellers joined in with the parade.

Led by gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and Midland MEP Michael Cashman, the procession through city streets culminated in a huge celebration in Birmingham’s gay village on Saturday and Sunday.

Headline performers included JLS, Paloma Faith and Bananarama.

Festival director Lawrence Barton said: “This year’s festival has been undoubtedly our most successful in its 17-year history.

"We were amazed by the tens of thousands spectators that turned out to support our Equal Love Parade in addition to the 50,000 visitors to the two-day Pride festival that followed.

“We are indebted to both West Midlands Police and the security teams deployed who collectively ensured it was such a safe and happy Pride for everyone to enjoy.”

Birmingham Pride raised a record-breaking sum for local LGBT/HIV charity organisations from wristband sales. The final total has yet to be revealed.

West Midlands Police confirmed there had been no arrests at the festival.
