City council budget withdraws plan to lose 32 park keepers

Threats to make an army of Birmingham park keepers and rangers redundant have been withdrawn following outcry from residents groups.

The news came as bosses confirmed their final budget for 2014/15 including a 1.99 per cent council tax rise.

But following widespread consultation on the proposed budget have been withdrawn.

Instead the full compliment of parkies are to be kept and a more modest £600,000 cuts made through efficiencies, removing some old lesser used playgrounds.

The council has set the band D council tax at £1,136.05, a rise of 1.99 per cent on last year - the highest rise allowed without calling a public referendum.

But with £85 million cuts to be made this year and more next many services remain under threat - including the closure of four libraries and the outdoor education service.

Council Labour leader Sir Albert Bore said that it is getting more difficult to make cuts every year.

He said: “The city council has been making radical changes to the way we work and achieving significant efficiency savings for several years, under both this political administration and the last.
