Birmingham has been named the nation's fourth most prosperous city as the number of millionaires living here soars.

Research by Barclays revealed this was a rise of 8,000 - a 33 per cent increase in the last five years, as the economic recovery continues.

The banking group also revealed Birmingham was now ranked fourth in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ for prosperity, based on a range of different economic factors.

Only London, Reading and Cambridge came higher with city rivals Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle languishing in eighth, ninth and tenth places respectively.

Akshaya Bhargava, chief executive of Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, said: "The º£½ÇÊÓÆµ is becoming more prosperous, with every region having grown in affluence since 2010.

"It is also encouraging to see that regions and cities are starting to close the gap with London in terms of prosperity; with the North East, for example, seeing business growth rates behind only London."
