Long-awaited repairs to a busy road bridge in Birmingham city centre will finally start - 18 months after it closed.

The one-way Aston Bridge, which carries traffic out of the city onto the A5127 Lichfield Road over the Aston Expressway, was shut in September 2014 after a lorry struck it.

Since then, the closure has interrupted the flow of traffic entering and leaving Dartmouth Circus island and caused to delays to journeys.

But Amey, which is responsible for road repairs in Birmingham, has announced the work will finally start.

Motorists have been warned however that the repairs will bring further closures.

The work will start today and involve night closures of the exit slip road from the Aston Expressway onto Dartmouth Circus and one lane of the Aston Expressway into city.

They will run from 10pm to 6am every night for eight weeks.

Diversions will be in place around Dartmouth Circus during night closures and existing diversions for bridge users will remain in place via Thomas Street.
