A proposal to raze a factory and replace it with 143 new homes has received approval.
The site off Edge Lane in Droylsden is currently occupied by seafood processing firm, Seamark plc, who plan to knock down their existing work buildings and construct a combination of apartment blocks and houses. A total of 72 flats will be erected across five, four-storey blocks with views over Ashton Canal.
The remaining 71 properties will comprise a variety of one, two, three and four-bedroom houses.
During a planning panel meeting last year where the proposal was initially given the green light, the developer revealed that the project had already been downsized from an initial 225 homes to 143. The maximum height of the apartment blocks was also lowered from six storeys to four, attendees at the Droylsden meeting were informed.
Seamark PLC also abandoned plans for a retirement living complex following concerns raised during consultation.
The Edge Lane plot currently houses the company's cold storage and processing units, which have been operational in the area since 1997. After demolition, the workforce would relocate to Seamark's new base in east Manchester.
Although the plan was approved by the planning panel in February of the previous year, it only recently received final sign-off. This follows negotiations with Tameside Council regarding financial contributions towards local infrastructure and the provision of affordable housing.
