Anglesey is in the running for a new ‘factory by the sea’ project for offshore wind power mega-cables - but firm says deal could only happen if the island has freeport status.

Cable manufacturer Tratos º£½ÇÊÓƵ, based at Knowsley on Merseyside, wants a site next to the sea to overcome road and rail transportation limitations and has earmarked the island as a potential location.

They say it would bring 300 jobs with Holyhead the current target site.

But the firm says freeport status - with the duties, tariffs, business rate and planning benefits - would be essential with plans to export globally from the site.

Talks are ongoing with a number of freeports and the firm says it has the support of Ynys Mon MP Virginia Crosbie, who heads up the Anglesey Freeport Bidding Consortium.

The company is run by Dr Maurizio Bragagni, an active supporter and donor to the Conservative Party, with the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government pressing for a freeport in Wales.

A Tratos spokesman said: "Tratos is in discussions with a number of º£½ÇÊÓƵ locations that already have freeport status - but if Anglesey achieves freeport status the company would very much like to explore further some of the particular advantages the location offers.

"Building the factory at Anglesey island would not only fulfil the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s increasing demand for export and array cables of any length for the next 30 years, but would also export to the EU, globally."
