A 拢90 million drive by government to help heavy industry and homes tackle emissions launches today.

The huge package includes funding towards Europe鈥檚 first hydrogen plants 鈥 in Merseyside and Aberdeen 鈥 as well as the development of technology to use offshore wind energy harnessed off the Humber to green up a leading oil refinery.

Further plans centre on switching industrial reliance on fossil fuels to renewables in industries such as cement and glass production.

The remaining 拢20 million will be used to fund projects aimed at cutting household emissions and bills through nine 海角视频-wide local 鈥渟mart energy鈥 projects.

More than 250,000 people could have their homes powered by local renewable sources by 2030 鈥 which could lead to their energy bills reducing by as much as half, thanks to this government funding.

If successful, nine community pilot projects could revolutionise local energy generation 鈥 allowing communities to join the frontline in the fight against climate change.

Set to officially launch the scheme in Grimsby today, the recipient of the largest single grant, Energy and Clean Growth Minister Kwasi Kwarteng said: 鈥淐leaning up emissions from industry and housing is a big challenge but today鈥檚 拢90 million investment will set us on the right path as we develop clean technologies like hydrogen.

Hydrogen projects awarded funding:

Project Leading body Funding received
Dolphyn Project Environmental Resources Management Ltd 拢3.12尘
HyNet Progressive Energy Limited, in collaboration with Johnson Matthey, SNC Lavalin and Essar Oil 拢7.48尘
Gigastack ITM Power Trading Ltd, in collaboration with Orsted, Phillips 66 and Element Energy 拢7.5尘
Acorn Project Pale Blue Dot Energy 拢2.7尘
HyPER Cranfield University, in collaboration with Gas Technology Institute and Doosan 拢7.44尘

鈥淭his is an important part of our world-leading efforts in eliminating our contribution to climate change by 2050 while also growing our economy, creating up to two million green collar jobs across the country.鈥

The hydrogen supply programme will share 拢28 million as part of the announcement, with Orsted 鈥 where Mr Kwartend is visiting 鈥 Sheffield-based ITM and refinery operator Phillips 66 being awarded 拢7.5 million.

Homes will benefit too.

In Rugeley, Staffordshire, a coal-fired power station is to be demolished and turned into a sustainable village of 2,300 homes. Residents will benefit from thermal storage units instead of traditional gas boilers, enabling them to draw, store and heat their homes with geothermal energy from local canals and disused mine shafts.

In Coleraine, Northern Ireland, a micro-grid of nearly 100 homes will be established, powered entirely by local wind power. It will help lower household electricity bills by as much as 50 per cent and boost the contribution of renewables to the local energy mix by a quarter.

Fuel switching projects awarded funding:

Project Leading body Funding received
HyNet Progressive Energy Ltd, in collaboration with Pilkington, Unilever and Essar 拢5.27尘
Hydrogen Alternatives to Gas for Calcium Lime Manufacturing British Lime Association 拢2.82尘
Switching Fuels for Cement Production Mineral Products Association 拢3.2尘
Switching Technologies for the Glass Sector听 Glass Futures Ltd and partners 拢7.12尘

The projects have the potential to be scaled up and rolled out across industry, meaning houses and roads could be built using low-emission concrete by the end of听 the decade.

BEIS said a further 拢22 million of funding will go to top 海角视频 scientists and engineers to conduct 鈥渃utting-edge research鈥 into decarbonising industry, focussing on emission-heavy transport and heating.

The complete package forms part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy鈥檚 拢500 million innovation fund, which is dedicated to harnessing and rolling out cutting edge technology to fight climate change. Westminster is eyeing up the prize of removing 3.2 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2030.

Currently difficult and expensive to produce in bulk, hydrogen is seen as vital in the fight against climate change as a low carbon alternative to fossil fuels used by heavy transport and industry.
