20,000 voters vanish from Birmingham's electoral roll

New registration system prompted by 'banana republic' frauds scandal

The number of voters in Birmingham has fallen by more than 20,000 since a controversial new system of registering to vote was introduced.

An independent watchdog called for the change, which has been introduced nationwide, after a court ruled in 2005 that there had been widespread voting fraud in Birmingham.

But Labour has criticised the way the changes were introduced, saying they have been “rushed” and many students in particular are in danger of losing the right to vote.

figures show that 728,732 people were registered to in December 2014, but this was down to 707,998 in December 2015, a fall of 20,734.

And 707,888 people were registered to vote in parliamentary elections in December 2014, compared to 686,957 a year later, a drop of 20,931.

Individual voter registration means each person is now required to register to vote individually, providing “identifying information” such as their date of birth and national insurance number.

Applications must be verified before voters added to the register.

Previously, one person in a household simply filled in a form writing in the names of everyone living there who was eligible to vote.
