200 jobs at risk in Stoke-on-Trent as more firms announce redundancies

Autoneum and Johnson Tiles are looking to reduce their workforce in the city

Autoneum and Johnson Tiles are collectively looking to shed around 200 jobs

Around 200 jobs are at risk in Stoke-on-Trent after two companies revealed that they are looking to cut staff numbers as a result of coronavirus.

Up to 140 positions are at risk at automotive supply business Autoneum, which has a plant in Trentham, while a further 60 look set to be axed at Tunstall tile-maker Johnson Tiles.

Autoneum says it is looking at 'realigning its activities and workforce' to reflect the decline in demand brought on by the pandemic.

The Switzerland-headquartered business is a manufacturer of in-vehicle acoustic and thermal insulation, serving big-name customers across the world including Toyota and Jaguar Land Rover.

It estimates that its losses for the first half of the year will be 'in the higher double-digit million range' as a result of Covid-19.

An Autoneum spokesman said: "As a consequence of the corona pandemic, the automotive industry and Autoneum as a supplier to all major vehicle manufacturers are facing a significant, unprecedented market decline and production levels that are forecasted to remain low in the coming years.

"Autoneum has to realign its activities and workforce to this new market reality, which also affects our manufacturing site in Stoke-on-Trent.

"It is our highest priority to safeguard the long-term future of our Stoke-on-Trent plant.
