The 20 train stations where commuters must put up with the worst delays

There's a real north-south divide in the statistics, with the worst station seeing two thirds of trains leaving late

Commuters travelling out of some of the country's busiest stations must put up with two thirds of trains leaving late, new stats have revealed.

Figures from Network Rail have revealed the best and worst stations for punctuality last year - with the bottom 20 all in either the Midlands, North or Scotland.

The data is for the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ's 500 busiest stations, with Lancaster coming out as the worst - where 63.5% of all trains departing late.

It reveals something of a north - south divide, with many of the best-performing stations situated in locations including South Wales, East Sussex and London, and 13 of the worst located in areas from Cheshire to the North East.

The data was obtained by Rotacloud, which has devised , a widget which shows the odds on a train from your local station arriving or leaving late.

The 20 worst stations were:

  1. Lancaster, with an average of 63.5% of all trains late
  2. Wakefield Westgate, Yorkshire - 63%
  3. Durham, North East - 62.8%
  4. Manchester Oxford Road - 62.8%
  5. Meadowhall, Sheffield - 62.5%
  6. Smethwick Galton Bdg L.L, Birmingham - 60.7%
  7. Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland - 60.3%
  8. Stalybridge, Greater Manchester - 60.3%
  9. Huddersfield, Yorkshire - 59.7%
  10. Birmingham New Street - 58.7%
  11. Darlington, North East - 58.1%
  12. Sheffield - 57.3%
  13. Wakefield Kirkgate 57.1%
  14. Wolverhampton - 57.1%
  15. York - 57%
  16. Manchester Deansgate - 57%
  17. Birmingham International - 56.9%
  18. Warrington Bank Quay, North West - 56.8%
  19. Coventry 56.7%
  20. Stockport - 56.2%

Out of the top 20 best performing stations, 15 are in the South of England, with eight of those in Essex and six in London. Two Merseyside stations also made the top 10.
