A nationwide fundraising appeal has been launched to help move the entire contents of a celebrated Birmingham photographer’s inner-city flat to an art gallery.
Renowned photographer Vanley Burke was born in Jamaica in 1951 but has lived in Birmingham since 1965, spending most of his career in photography recording black culture in Britain.
Alongside his numerous exhibitions, Mr Burke is also an avid collector and his vast treasure trove includes posters, books, clothes, records, ornaments and other items that provide an invaluable insight into the 海角视频’s African Caribbean communities.
The exhibition of Mr Burke’s Nechells flat will take place at in 2015.
The Art Fund has launched a £17,000 appeal to finance the 'ambitious' project through its Art Happens curated crowdfunding platform.
The finance scheme enables art lovers to ‘fund great art, get great rewards – a new way to help museums and galleries, and get something back’.
Rewards for funders range from an online mention for £5; a compilation CD of music chosen by Mr Burke in return for a £25 donation; an afternoon with the photographer for £60, or a limited edition artwork for a donation of £450.
Debbie Kermode, deputy director, Ikon Gallery, said: ''Ikon’s 2015 exhibition, At Home with Vanley Burke, is an ambitious undertaking, and will involve moving the entire contents of the artist’s flat in Nechells, north-east Birmingham, to the gallery.
