Work has started on a massive distribution facility for a fantasy miniature wargames company, which is being built at a new logistics hub near Castle Donington.
In October, it was announced that Games Workshop, which is headquartered in Nottingham, had agreed a deal for a 177,500 sq ft warehouse at the 700-acre SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (SLPEMG).
Now, Winvic Construction, the main contractor at the site, has said it has started work on the new facility this week.

It will be the fifth industrial unit to be build at SLPEMG - and will see Games Workshop joins Amazon, XPO Logistics, Kuehne & Nagel and Shop Direct at the site.
The Games Workshop building will include 12,000 sq ft of office space and 101,490 sq ft of yard space.
According to Winvic, at 14.8 metres high, the Games Workshop building will not be as high as other warehouses which have already been constructed.
This is because of “stringent” crane height restrictions in relation to air traffic from nearby East Midlands Airport.
Winvic will also build a spur road to the plot as part of associated works and fit out the offices in the building before reaching practical completion in July.

The company was responsible for building the first four units at East Midlands Gateway, totalling more than 2.5 million sq ft.
It has also delivered the park’s infrastructure programme, which comprises a 50-acre Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) that will receive its first trains in early 2020.
Key elements of the infrastructure phase also include a new route connecting the site to the M1 via a bridge over the motorway, a public bus terminal, 126,000 square metre carriageway construction, as well as the remediation of 32,000 square metres of land and 322,000 cubic metres of earthwork fill.
Rob Bull, director at Winvic Construction said: “Our relationship with SEGRO has gone from strength-to-strength since we began one of the largest earth-moving, multi-agency developments in Europe three years ago at the SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway site.
“Now, we’re looking forward to starting further industrial construction on Plot 6 for Games Workshop.
“The warehouse and distribution space will total six million sq ft when complete and the SRFI covers 50 acres.
“Few projects are as large or broad as SLPEMG or have huge challenges like an adjacent airport.

Games Workshop is a British manufacturer of fantasy miniatures and is the company behind Warhammer.
In the summer, Games Workshop reported that its sales had grown by more than £250 million, with bosses describing it as the “best year in its history”.
The firm has recently been investing in its Lenton headquarters after Nottingham City Council approved plans to create a new warehouse and production facilities and a four-storey office building last August.

Once complete, its new East Midlands Gateway site will become the main distribution hub for the FTSE 250-listed company, supplementing its current distribution operation in Nottingham.
