A Hinkley Point C supply chain company has opened a huge new warehouse in Weston-super-Mare dedicated to the nuclear project.
Wiltshire-based Wincanton, which was acquired by US logistics giant GXO last year after a review by the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's competition watchdog, is the official warehouse and transport service partner for the Bridgwater power plant.
The new warehouse is Wincanton's sixth for the nuclear project and will create up to 70 jobs.
It will be used for securing goods and process management as well as inventory controls, according to the company.
Paul Durkin, chief customer and innovation officer at Wincanton, said: “Our long-standing partnership with EDF Energy is built on a foundation of trust and a shared commitment to excellence.
"We're incredibly proud to expand our role in the Hinkley Point C project – a landmark undertaking that will power the º£½ÇÊÓƵ for generations. This new warehouse exemplifies our commitment to delivering innovative, scalable, and resilient supply chain solutions at pace.â€
Brian Buckingham, senior logistics operations manager for Hinkley Point C at EDF, added: “Wincanton is a trusted, long-term partner supporting our vast and complex logistics needs.
"Throughout the construction of Hinkley Point C, Wincanton has proved itself to be a supplier with expertise, experience and the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the project.
"We look forward to servicing the growth of the build programme through the new warehouse in Weston-super-Mare.â€
A new report, released on Monday, revealed that 27,000 people are now directly employed at Hinkley Point C.
According to the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), Britain’s nuclear power sector grew by a quarter in 2024 to £20bn compared with three years ago.
The growth was underpinned by a record workforce which has increased by a third, the research found. Around 87,000 people now work in the industry, with the rise largely driven by new nuclear projects.
