The education school at a Birmingham university has a new look following an £11 million project.

The Benjamin Zephaniah Building, on Birmingham City University's city centre campus in Fox Street, has undergone a major facelift to provide a new home for its education and teacher training school.

The work, led by specialist fitout contractor Overbury, covered five floors and incorporated teaching spaces for science, the arts and design and textiles and social study areas for students.

A leaking roof was also removed and replaced to make the building watertight while the ground-floor areas and main atrium were also revamped.

The improvements at the building, formerly known as University House, are part of BCU's ongoing programme of investment in its learning spaces.

Hazel Herbert, senior project manager at Birmingham City University, said: "The Benjamin Zephaniah Building project is a significant one for BCU as it continues to strive to ensure a great university experience for our students."

Simon Stevens, contracts manager at Overbury, added: "Having started with an outline design from the client, our big challenge was delivering the project to the high standards associated with our projects around a challenging project timescale.

"This couldn't have been done without true collaboration between ourselves and BCU.

"Having worked with the team previously, we were able to not only call on those existing strong relationships but also engage with the lecturers and students as end users of the space to ensure the scheme works for everyone involved."

The Benjamin Zephaniah Building project is the fifth major scheme undertaken by Overbury for the university, having previously delivered the fit out of the School of Jewellery, its clinical skills and simulation facilities for health courses, the Joseph Priestley Building and STEAMhouse.

Other partners on the work were Procure Partnerships, Currie and Brown, CPW, Baynham Meikle, Hoare Lea, Jensen Hughes and Associated Architects.
