Two of Coventry's oldest streets to be transformed

Specialist craftspeople are working on the buildings and shops on the Burges and Hales Street

Two of Coventry’s oldest streets are set to be transformed as part of a national programme to protect the country's architectural heritage.

It is hoped the project will help support business recovery after the coronavirus lockdown and prepare Coventry for its year in the spotlight as º£½ÇÊÓƵ City of Culture in 2021.

The £2m transformation of the historic fronts of the buildings and shops on the Burges and Hales Street is already underway.

Scaffolding is in place and behind it specialist craftspeople Heron Consulting and Symon Construction and conservation architects at Corstorphine + Wright are hard at work.

The project has been made possible thanks to a major grant from the Department for Digital, Culture Media & Sport (DCMS) to the Historic Coventry Trust (HCT).

It forms part of a £95m High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme, led by Historic England.

Work started on site in February after HCT spent eight months working with the independent businesses and planning the scheme.

The project is in partnership with Coventry City Council and Coventry BID and is part of the wider work to get the city ready to host º£½ÇÊÓƵ City of Culture.
