Work is underway to convert a derelict warehouse into new flexible working space near Bristol’s harbourside hub of independent businesses Wapping Wharf.

The former J and S Fry warehouse, which used to form part of the Old Bristol Gaol, is set to be transformed into more than 20,000 sq ft of offices, called CARGO Work.

The new offices will be clad in components from shipping containers and set within the stone walls of the former warehouse on the corner of Wapping Road and Cumberland Road. When complete, it will offer working space for up to 230 people.

Newly released CGI images show that the development will feature a glazed courtyard canopy, balconies and terraces to all floors with views across south Bristol.

Preparatory works have already taken place on site with main construction of the shell and core of the building now underway. The creation of the steel frame will follow in September.

The sustainably minded project will feature screens to prevent heat gain inside the building, photovoltaic roof panels to create solar energy, 47 secure bicycle racks, seven parking spaces, and electric vehicle charging points.

Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer of Wapping Wharf, said the company was “thrilled” with how work was progressing on the project, which he described as “completely unique concept”.
