A new 36-storey tower is set to be built on a Birmingham city centre street already busy with high-rise development.

Plans have been unveiled by Birmingham-based Taylor Grange Developments to construct a £58 million block of 264 serviced apartments on land at 211 Broad Street.

The project would also have space for retail, food and drink outlets, residents' lounge and a gym but no car parking.

At just 31 feet wide and a first for Birmingham, the tower would be a so-called 'super slender' building due to the compact nature of the application site and its proximity to other existing and planned buildings.

The site is currently occupied by the vacant Transport House, the former home of the TGWU trade union, and also 117-118 Tennant Street at the rear - both of which are to be demolished as part of the scheme.

A stop on the new Westside extension of the West Midlands Metro will be a short walk away when it completes in 2021.

Jewellery Quarter-based practice Glancy Nicholls Architects has designed the scheme with planning consultancy from Savills.

A report submitted in support of the new planning application said: "The proposals have been carefully designed taking full account of the existing and emerging built context in order to provide an appropriate response.
