Plans for a new care home have been approved at the sixth attempt despite vehement objections from neighbours.

The Moundsley Hall Nursing Home's plans to develop a site, at 63-65 Penns Lane, were given the green light after a narrow seven to five vote by member of Birmingham City Council's planning committee.

Residents had complained the two-storey building would be too large, overshadow neighbours, cause traffic and parking problems and that a care home was out of character for the road.

The scheme does have the support of the West Midlands Care Association and Birmingham Care Consortium as a much needed facility for the town.

Various planning applications for care homes were submitted between 2007 and last year and plans were also rejected by a government inspector on appeal.

Resident Alan Deeming said: "It is too large to squeeze onto this site."

But Moundsley Hall architect Richard Bailey responded: "The scheme fully addresses all of the issues raised by the planning inspector.

"The scheme would provide a good residential environment for the occupiers of the home without causing any harm to the neighbours."
