The structure of a forthcoming £16m leisure regeneration project in the centre of Bridgwater, Somerset has been completed.

The final piece of steel has been installed on the roof of the 41.8ft high Northgate Yard development, which is being led and funded by Sedgemoor District Council, after work got underway earlier this year.

Scheduled for completion in Autumn 2022, the 40,000 sq ft scheme will have entertainment facilities including a seven-screen cinema, an eight-lane bowling alley and a sports bar.

The development, which is being overseen by main contractor Willmott Dixon, has already secured anchor tenants in South West cinema chain WTW Scott Cinemas plus bowling alley and sports bar operator Allstars.

It will also feature 12,000 sq ft of flexible restaurant space in five restaurant units, which it is hoped will attract local, regional and national food and drink brands.

A traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony was held to mark the milestone, with a small tree was taken to the top of the building and children from the adjacent Northgate Primary School signing their names on beams.

The tree will be planted at Brewery field next to the site, which will also be redeveloped to include an outdoor children’s play area and landscaped parkland with a pond.

Cllr Alan Bradford, chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, said: “Northgate Yard is a huge investment in the town centre and is set to be a landmark destination for both locals and tourists.
