A hotel in Somerset is to be turned into a support hub and accommodation for young homeless people and families.

The 20-bedroom Gascony Hotel, in Minehead, was sold to community charity YMCA Dulverton Group, which provides vulnerable people in Somerset and Devon with safe places to sleep.

Derek and Angela Tomlinson, the previous owners, are retiring after running the hotel for nearly 23 years.

Mr and Mrs Tomlinson said: “While being sad at leaving the hotel after all these years we are delighted that the building will be repurposed for such a worthwhile cause we wish YMCA Dulverton group every success in their venture.”

The Gascony was sold for £720,000 on a freehold basis. Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co brokered the deal.

YMCA Dulverton Group was advised by Philip Harcourt of Development Solutions on the sale.

Peter Stephenson, head of development at YMCA Dulverton Group, said the hotel had come onto the market at "just the right time".

He said: "the whole team has been amazing in bringing it forward to completion.
