A prominent hotel in central Sheffield has been acquired by Germany's 1912 Hotels GmbH - its first property in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

The St Paul's venue is now owned by 1912 Hotels St Pauls Ltd, the newly established º£½ÇÊÓƵ subsidiary of the Hamburg-based international hospitality operator. The hotel trades under the Mercure name, with 1912 saying the venue - which overlooks the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden - is a "cornerstone of Sheffield’s hospitality landscape".

Audun Lekve, CEO of 1912 Hotels & Resorts, said: "Sheffield has a spirit we really connect with. We are proud to begin our º£½ÇÊÓƵ journey with such a strong and iconic property at the heart of the city."

Bosses at 1912 say the takeover is "just the beginning" and that developments are set to be announced early next year. The hotel remains open with the buyers saying guests can expect to see gradual changes in service and design in line with 1912's style.

Katharina Hohn, co-founder of 1912 Hotels, said: "There is something special in store. Sheffield is the first of many steps for us in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and we are looking forward to sharing more very soon."

The undisclosed deal was led by DWF, involving corporate partner Alan Barnett and real estate associate Oliver Palmer, with support from tax senior associate Alex Tolcher, director Nigel Crebbin and licensing senior associate David Crank.

Mr Barnett said: “We’re delighted to have supported 1912 Hotels on this landmark acquisition. It’s a significant step in their º£½ÇÊÓƵ growth journey, and we’re proud to have brought together a strong multi-disciplinary team to deliver a seamless result.”

Duncan Gray, managing director of 1912 Hotels, said: "We are thrilled to have completed our first º£½ÇÊÓƵ acquisition with the support of DWF. Their team’s expertise and collaborative approach have been instrumental in helping us establish a strong foundation for our º£½ÇÊÓƵ expansion."
