Sales are up but profits are down at cheese-packing giant Ornua Foods º£½ÇÊÓƵ

Bosses say that the fall in pre-tax profits can be attributed to 'less favourable market conditions'

A Staffordshire cheese packing firm which counts Kerrygold and Pilgrims Choice among its brands saw pre-tax profits fall in 2018.

Ornua Foods º£½ÇÊÓƵ, which employs 600 people at its facility in Leek, Staffordshire, has revealed that pre-tax profits for last year dropped to £6.8 million from £7.1 million in 2017.

The profit decrease has been attributed to 'less favourable market conditions.'

But in the same results announcement, the company outlined that sales for the 12 month period increased to £322 million - up from £319 million in 2017.

Bosses say the firm's overall performance was 'solid' and believe these latest results reflect Ornua's commitment to following a clear and consistent strategy in what 'continues to be a highly challenging and volatile market environment.'

Managing director Bill Hunter, said: “Our solid financial performance reflects our focus on delivering for our major º£½ÇÊÓƵ retail customers consistent quality, customer service excellence, innovative ways of working and a strong own-label and branded product portfolio.”

Mr Hunter added he is positive that several new business wins – coupled with the capital investment programmes recently undertaken – are expected to be reflected in future years.
