Powergen plans to spell the end for Madin's office block

Long-awaited application is finally lodged to knock down and regenerate vacant building in Shirley town centre which has been empty for more than two decades

CGI of plans to regenerate the former Powergen site in Shirley

Plans have finally been lodged to knock down and regenerate the former Powergen site in Solihull more than two decades after it was vacated.

The £75 million redevelopment, which would see the end of another building designed by renowned Birmingham architect would be centred around an ExtraCare retirement village for elderly people.

Joint venture partnership Shirley Advance, which is is also hoping to secure permission to regenerate the plot on the corner of Haslucks Green Road and the A34.

Under the scheme, all of the existing buildings on the ten-acre site in Shirley town centre would be demolished including the old Powergen tower and the redundant multi-storey car park.

In their place would be built a 261-apartment retirement village and an Asda petrol station and convenience store.

There would also be 113 new houses by Lioncourt Homes - built to comply with the Help to Buy initiative - comprising 57 two-bed apartments and seven two-bedroom, 31 three-bedroom and 18 four-bedroom houses.

Shirley Advance is a JV between London-based funder Helical Bar and Birmingham-based Coltham Developments.

It is working with Asda and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to bring forward the redevelopment with the land owned by all three parties, meaning no additional land is required to deliver the project.
