Plymouth's ex-Debenhams building goes on sale for £3.5m

The vast five-storey former department store could be broken up for shops, offices or even student flats

The Debenhams store in Plymouth city centre

Plymouth’s huge former Debenhams department store has gone on sale for more than £3.5m and could be turned into small shops, offices - or even student flats.

The city centre building, which has been , is being marketed to potential developers.

They are being told the five-storey pile is ripe for being reconfigured into a range of potential uses, including shops, a cinema, offices and co-working space, and even, somewhat surprisingly, student accommodation.

Student numbers have been declining in the city, with the University of Plymouth bemoaning a £6.9m drop in tuition fees in 2020 as a result, and it already has several blocks of student flats in the city centre with the new 500-bed Plymouth Cross House due to open soon too.

But property consultants at Plymouth’s Vickery Holman and London’s Allsop say there is potential for the Debenhams building to become student accommodation and a brochure said: “ The location of the subject property is ideal for student housing accommodation as supported by nearby dormitories.”

However, it is not the only use the 159,259sq ft building could be put to, especially as the Government recently announced radical changes to the planning system, making it more flexible in a bid to revitalize under-pressure high streets blighted by closed retail outlets.

The sales brochure said: “There is exceptional appetite from both investors and the local council to rejuvenate Plymouth city centre and the subject property will play a pivotal part in increasing the city centre’s offering. There is a clear opportunity for a purchaser to re-purpose the site.”
