A prominent office block in Birmingham's Colmore Business District is set to undergo a wholesale facelift to create a new complex reaching 26 storeys.

Plans have been submitted to the city council for the partial demolition, refurbishment and extension of Colmore Gate.

The developer behind the scheme says it could create thousands of new jobs and generate over £200 million in economic output annually.

The existing Colmore Gate building sits at the eastern end of Colmore Row, next to the Great Western Arcade, and extends at the rear along Bull Street.

The proposals would see the development of a new 26-storey tower and a ten-storey shoulder building to create office space. It has a cut-through walkway which would be closed as part of the project and replaced by a pedestrian route around the building.

Other proposals include landscape and biodiversity features, upgrades to the appearance and façade of the existing building and improved employee and visitor facilities.

There would also be new entrances onto Colmore Row and Bull Street and the retention of ground-floor commercial units.
