Developer and operator Moda Living has launched a consultation on phase two of the New Garden Square scheme in Edgbaston.

Alongside the tall residential tower, there would be amenities for residents and commercial space for retail, restaurant or café uses, subject to city council backing.

It is due to begin welcoming residents in the first half of next year while the overall masterplan could eventually see up to 1,600 new residential units and £6 million worth of public realm at the 11-acre site.

The development land, which is bordered by Hagley Road and Beaufort Road, is owned by historic Birmingham property group Calthorpe Estates.

Proposals for New Garden Square were first launched in 2016 and early iterations contained plans for around 500,000 sq ft of office space and a 100-bedroom hotel alongside apartments and accommodation for food and beverage operators.

But in 2021 Moda Living announced it had teamed up with a US investor to deliver a new portfolio of residential projects across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, starting with New Garden Square.

Moda Living's development executive Saif Uddin said: "Moda has ambitious plans at New Garden Square to deliver a ‘Moda neighbourhood' alongside our partners at Calthorpe Estates.

"Our latest proposals demonstrate the scale of our ambition and the confidence we have in this location and in Birmingham.

"Our inclusive plans will regenerate a brownfield site, offering an extensive range of benefits to the existing local community and future residents alike."

Harrogate-based Moda Living led the development of the 42-storey Mercian tower in Broad Street and is now on site at the Great Charles Square project which will see 722 apartments for rent built on the former Ludgate Hill car park.

* A public consultation event is being held for phase two of New Garden Square between 3pm and 8pm on October 24 and 25 at the Plough and Harrow, Hagley Road. Proposals will also be placed on the New Garden Square website
