Plans have been lodged to create a new apartment complex on the site of a former Birmingham City Council office block.

Sama Investment Group is behind the scheme to transform 1 Lancaster Circus in the city centre into a new development of two towers, reaching 41 and 48 storeys respectively.

This latest step follows a consultation period over the summer after the plans for the vacant site were first revealed last year.

The 1.3-acre application site sits next to Lancaster Circus island, opposite the old Central Fire Station in the city's Gun Quarter.

The development would contain a mix of 900 apartments and 700 units for students, likely to appeal to those attending Aston and Birmingham City universities which are both a short walk away.

Proposed amenities include a gym, spa, cinema room and ground-floor space for commercial or leisure uses. The project will also have public open space and a pedestrian corridor, subject to winning the backing of city council planning chiefs.

The final plans have seen the addition of a pavilion to part of the site which Sama said would act as a focal point for the development and allow residents and the public to circulate through more effectively.
