Plans to transform the site of a former Co-op store in the centre of Tonypandy into a new mixed-use scheme have been revealed.

It comes as Rhondda Housing Association has acquired the  empty 17,000 sq ft store site on Dunraven Street, which had been on the market with a £232,000 price tag.

The Co-op store ceased trading back in 2012, but now the housing association have plans over the next two years to transform the site, close to Tonypandy Train Station, into a new mixed-use scheme providing:

  • New co-working space.
  • Affordable homes to rent.
  • Potentially its own new head office.

The association said it has been in discussions with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, as well as having agreed initial concept designs with their architects.

Chief executive of the housing association, Luke Takeuchi, said: “This is an exciting project for us and for Tonypandy and we are delighted to be part of the wider town centre regeneration plans.

"We have invested in this site as we feel there is genuine potential to improve the area and give local people a vibrant town centre that they can be proud of.

"The local authority have been extremely helpful and encouraging and we are looking forward to working with them closely on this project during the coming months."
