Plans to transform a brownfield site in Bristol into student flats have been approved.

The proposal for the St Philip’s Marsh scheme was first submitted by property developer Summix in April 2019.

Under the plans, the site at the corner of Feeder Road and Albert Road will see the existing industrial buildings replaced with 595 student apartments and 3,500 sq metres commercial space facing the main roads.

The Government’s planning inspector said the proposals met "a pressing need" for purpose-built student accommodation in the city and would free up family homes onto the housing market.

The developer will also make improvements to the cycle lane on Feeder Road as well as including planting and public realm improvements to support biodiversity.

Stuart Black, development director at Summix, said the plans would bring the site back into "positive use" and act as a gateway to the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

“We are absolutely delighted that our proposals to deliver much needed purpose-built student accommodation, alongside new commercial space, have been granted permission," he said.

"Our plans will not only help to meet an identified demand for student housing in a highly sustainable location, but will also support investment and job creation in the city by providing affordable commercial space close to the city centre, helping to support Bristol’s post Covid-19 economic recovery."
