Plans are underway to transform an 'unattractive' warehouse structure in Gloucester Docks into a superstore.

Jaspac Developments Ltd has lodged a planning application with Gloucester City Council, seeking approval to repurpose 12 Llanthony Road for retail use.

The building, previously a data centre, is currently seen as an detracting from the aesthetic appeal of neighbouring listed buildings, according to consultants involved in the project.

Until September last year, the site's rear yard was home to 26 cooling units and six generators but has since been vacant.

The developers argue that their proposal would restore the building to its original ground floor retail function, thereby activating the frontage and driving footfall in the city centre.

They also assure that the revamped building wouldn't be a source of noise disturbance for local residents, given that the development doesn't involve any machinery.

According to the planning documents: "The proposal would bring the vacant property back into much needed appropriate city centre use and would contribute towards the ongoing vitality and viability of the city centre,".

Furthermore, they claim that the proposed external modifications to the ground floor would both preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the original building and the Southgate Street conservation area.
