Plans for a purpose-built student accommodation scheme in central Bristol have been given the go ahead by Bristol City Council. Student housing provider Host said it would now move forward with the construction of the 471-bed block on Avon Street.

As well as student flats, the proposals include 300 sq m of flexible space in the form of a hub. The development, on the 0.36 hectare site, will be delivered across three buildings and arranged around an open courtyard.

The buildings, which were formerly occupied by Chanson Foods, are 200 metres from Bristol Temple Meads station and overlook the city's Floating Harbour. They will also be next to the University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

The student block is scheduled for completion by August 2025.

"[The development] will relieve some of the housing pressure on residential areas in the city and provide high-quality student accommodation and shared facilities in a superb location," a spokesperson for Host said.

The plans for Avon Street have been designed by the Bristol office of global architecture practice Chapman Taylor, and developed in consultation with the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council. Savills acted as planning consultants.

According to Host, the architecture of the new buildings references the area’s industrial past and the nearby historic railway structures. The scheme has been designed to go beyond the environmental requirements of Bristol City Council and will target BREEAM Excellent.

John Nesbitt, managing director at Host Student Housing, said: “The transformation of Bristol Temple Quarter and St Philip’s Marsh is one of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s largest regeneration projects and we are excited to be able to play our part.
