Planning submitted to build 692 student flats on site of ex-Royal Mail office in Nottingham

Sorting office has been vacant for 20 years and new building would vary from 12 to 15 storeys

How the Bendigo building in Nottingham could look

Property developer Godwin Developments has submitted plans for a 692 student bed scheme in Nottingham city centre.

The developer wants to knock down the city’s Royal Mail sorting office to make way for the huge scheme.

Plans lodged with Nottingham City Council propose knocking down the building which has been vacant for almost 20 years, and putting up a new scheme which would vary in height from 12 to 15 storeys.

Pending planning permission, the development on the corner of Bath Street and Cowan Street will be a called the Bendigo Building and be made up of a mix of studio apartments, four, five and six-bedroom clusters and disabled studio rooms.

The developer said it would create around 300 jobs during construction and 40 full-time positions when open.

The scheme, which has two commercial units on the ground floor, is within walking distance of Nottingham city centre, Nottingham Trent University, Sneinton Market and the main food and entertainment quarter, with the University of Nottingham and Nottingham train station accessible via public transport.

Matt Chandler, development director at Godwin Developments, said: “We are delighted to have reached this important milestone in our proposals for the re-development of this significant site in Nottingham.

“The city is a key º£½ÇÊÓƵ hub for higher education, with an ever-growing student population. As a business with a local presence, we recognise the substantial contribution that young people make to its potential.
